Willpower is like a muscle - you can tire it out. So, if you use willpower on one thing, you have less willpower to use later on resisting temptations, staying focused, or even making good decisions.
The people who are best at self-control are the ones who experience fewer temptations. The people who plan their life so they don’t have to use self-control are the most successful.
When distractions are an option, you’re always a little distracted by them. Regardless of whether or not resisting the temptation depletes your “willpower energy”, just being tempted to play is already distracting.
To be successful at avoiding temptations, you need to take your mind off the temptation, have something better to think about.
Having so many choices of things to do all the time can cause a persistent feeling of indecision or uncertainty. Each action provides a reward for a cost. From your brain’s perspective, the action that provides the most reward for the cost is not always 100% clear. This indecisiveness, this uncertainty can activate the brain in a away that generates anxiety and lowers your ability to focus. When you remove choices, your brain stops doing all those calculations and you’re more relaxed and more focused
