The paradox of choice | Barry Schwartz | TED
the postdoc has got five Monet prints 🖼️, and you rank them from best to worst, “I like this one the most, this one the least.”
Then, the postdoc “Thank you very much, the experiment’s over. Oh, by the way, I kind of screwed up and I bought too many of no. 2 and 3, so if you want to take one home you can just have it.”
2 conditions.
Bring people back 1 week later, have them re-rank the prints.
Turns out, the people who were allowed to change their mind don’t like their painting, in fact, they don’t like any of them anymore, and they have destroyed their opportunity to be happy. The people who were told “You can pick it, it’s yours, you can’t return it”, love their print, rank it as no. 1, and think the rest of them suck.
